Our Story
Welcome to the Mitchell Fire Protection District! Established in 1945, our roots go back to the construction of the first fire station in 1946, built on donated land with funds loaned by a local resident. In 1949, community support was solidified when voters created the tax-funded Mitchell Fire Protection District, ensuring stable financial backing for years to come.
From our first fire truck—a 1923 Seagraves pumper—to today’s modern fleet of two Frontline Pierce Pumpers and a 100-foot aerial ladder truck, we have continuously evolved to meet the needs of our community. Our team is proud to provide advanced fire protection and emergency medical services, including an in-house ALS ambulance service.
The Mitchell Fire Department is a proud member of MABAS 35, which strengthens our resources and response capabilities. Through strong partnerships with neighboring fire districts and mutual aid agreements, we ensure reliable support and protection for Mitchell and unincorporated Madison County.
With dedication, advanced equipment, and the trust of our community, we remain steadfast in our mission: to protect lives, property, and the well-being of those we serve.
Climbing the Ladder
Chief Joe Lee
Born into a proud firefighting family, Chief Joe Lee began his journey with the Mitchell Fire Department as a Junior Firefighter on January 20, 1990. His commitment, skill, and dedication carried him through the ranks, including service as a U.S. Steel Firefighter, before earning the distinguished role of Fire Chief for the Mitchell Fire Protection District.
Under Chief Lee’s leadership, the department has grown in both size and capability, advancing its equipment, training, and resources. His vision and guidance ensure the safety of Mitchell’s residents as well as the many visitors who travel through our community each day.

What We Do
MFD Ladies Auxiliary
Join us in celebrating the incredible bond of the fire service family. When our firefighters are out on long, cold days battling the elements, it’s the Ladies Auxiliary that steps in to provide vital support.

Beyond supporting our crews, the Auxiliary plays a key role in community outreach, educational programs, and family-friendly events that bring people together.

If you’re passionate about making an impact and serving your community, we invite you to become part of our Auxiliary. Together, we can continue to make a difference.
